1. ENGLISH

The best type of grandpiano for this type of preparation is a small or medium (between 150cm and 186cm / 5' and 6'1"). Other types of pianos, ovre 190cm, do not give good results because, especially in the first low three octaves, the strings are too long and almost nullify the effect o preparation. As much for piano brands, there is not much difference although the best results, acoustically, were obtained on Yamaha pianos (the CD recording, Apagón, was made on with Yamaha piano). The evaluation is empirical, because i didnt take under consideration factors unrelated to the piano, such as the room acoustics, amplification and microphones.

The piano is divided into the three ideal parts:

  1. The Lower Frequencies section. This first section is composed of the thickest single or double strings. On these I create a "mute" effect using plastic and wood wedges. On the last ones approaching the middle frequencies, I apply large metal clips (alligator clips) with either cork or felt., of those used to build electrical circuits.
  2. The middle part, on the other hand, works on a section composed of three strings. Over each string are applied alligator clips with applied pieces of cork or felt. Depending on the position of each one, a different percussive effect is achieved but at the same time misplaced positions on each string generates different resonance of the harmonics.
  3. The last section usesas well small alligator clips. This time without any application of different material than metal. Since these strings are very short you can alter the sound but elements other than metal would make them almost mute.

2. ITALIANO
